Amethyst Heart

Amethyst Heart

An amethyst specimen carved into a heart shape that measures about 3.25 inches long.

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. Substitution by irradiation of trivalent iron for silicon in the crystal lattice of quartz is what gives amethyst its violet color. The traditional birthstone for those born in February is amethyst. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it because they believed that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. In fact, that belief is where the Greek name “amethystos” comes from: “a-,” not, and “-mythsko,” intoxicate. In classical Greek texts, the titan Rhea, mother of Zeus, is said to have given Dionysus amethyst in order to preserve the wine-maker’s sanity.

Amethyst is believed to improve one’s mood. Those living with depression might find amethyst to be beneficial. Amethyst relieves stress and encourages inner-strength. In addition, it might aid one with abstaining from alcohol or other substances. The crown chakra is opened and activated by amethyst, which allows easier access to the divine. Amethyst enhances spiritual awareness and spiritual wisdom. It is also beneficial for work with the third eye chakra due to its ability to connect the physical plane with the higher realm. Amethyst is most beneficial for those with Aquarius, Capricorn, Pisces, and Virgo as their astrological sun sign. Hold amethyst and affirm: “Infinite possibilities are available to me.”
