A very high-quality, gem-like azurite specimen weighing almost 15 grams. No transformations into malachite on this piece!
Azurite, formerly known as chessylite, is a deep-blue copper mineral produced by the weathering of copper ore deposits. The name “azurite” is derived via Arabic from the Persian word “lazhward;” an area known for its deposits of another dark blue mineral, lapis lazuli. The Greek word for azurite is “kuanos,” which is the root of the English word “cyan.” Azurite was used as a pigment in antiquity. It was the source of blue for painters throughout the Middle Ages. Depending on the fineness to which it was ground, pigments created from azurite produced a range of blue hues. Mountain blue, Armenian stone, Azurro Della Magna, and blue blice are some of the names given to paints created from azurite. Over time, the azurite blues in these paintings have started to turn green. This is due to the pseudomorphic replacement of azurite by malachite when exposed to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The intense color of azurite makes it a popular collector's stone; however, bright light, heat, and open air tend to reduce the intensity of its color over time. To help preserve the deep blue color of a pristine azurite specimen, collectors should use a cool, dark, sealed storage environment similar to that of its original natural setting. Azurite is found in Australia, Chile, Egypt, France, Namibia, Peru, Russia, and the United States.
Azurite is called the Stone of Heaven by some because it aids in the pursuit of the heavenly self. The third eye chakra is opened by azurite; thereby, awakening psychic abilities and helping the user to recognize their intuition and any spiritual guidance that might be offered. Azurite relieves worries, phobias, and nagging negative thoughts. It also helps the owner to recognize the areas in their life that need attention. Azurite combines intellectual logic with love, which fosters compassion for oneself and others. When used with the throat chakra, Azurite encourages communication from the heart and heightens awareness of Spiritual communication. Azurite can help dissolve energy blockages, communication blockages, as well as blockages to one’s progress. This mineral also calms and relieves mental stress. Azurite is useful in meditation to clear the mind, promote deep introspection & visualization, and allow clear recognition of spiritual messages. Metaphysically, azurite can alleviate asthma, brain disorders, muscle cramps, and thyroid problems. Those with Aquarius or Sagittarius as their astrological sun sign will benefit most from the metaphysical benefits of azurite. Hold azurite and affirm: “I am open to guidance from the universe.”
