Botryoidal Hematite (A057)

Botryoidal Hematite (A057)

A botryoidal hematite specimen.

Hematite is an iron oxide and is mined as the main ore of iron. It is generally black to gray or brown to reddish-brown. The streak is always red. The name hematite is derived from the Greek word for blood, which was likely a reference to the red streak and the red color of some hematite specimens. Clay with 20-70% hematite is called ochre. Red ochre contains oxidized (or unhydrated) hematite while yellow ochre contains reduced (or hydrated) hematite.

Hematite is a grounding and protective stone. It absorbs negative energy and calms in times of stress or worry. Hematite is also good for cleansing the Root Chakra. In addition, it can help one to find their own, unique gifts and to release self-imposed limitations, while still maintaining a healthy amount of self-control. Hematite allows those who are doing spiritual work to still be able to function in the physical world and relate to others. Additionally, one should carry hematite when in need of balance and equilibrium or when having difficulty focusing one’s energy. Hematite is also believed to be useful in legal situations by increasing one’s self-confidence. Metaphysically, it is used to detoxify the liver and blood. Hematite protects against geopathic stress and electromagnetic smog. Those with Aquarius or Aries as their astrological sun sign will benefit most from the metaphysical benefits of hematite. Hold hematite and affirm: “My life is filled with balance and harmony.”

Natural hematite may contain a very slight magnetic charge. Please, if you wear a pacemaker, check with your doctor before working with this mineral. Items marketed as "Magnetic Hematite" are not actually hematite at all and should be avoided by those wearing a pacemaker.
