Spessartine Garnet (aka. Etched Garnet) is a nesosilicate, manganese-aluminum garnet species. The mineral spessartine should not be confused with a type of igneous rock called spessartite. Spessartine's name is a derivative of Spessart in Bavaria, Germany, the type locality of the mineral. It occurs most often in granite pegmatite and allied rock types and in certain low-grade metamorphic phyllites. Spessartine garnet is also found in Australia, Myanmar, India, Afghanistan, Israel, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Tanzania and the United States. It varies in color from violet-red to orange-yellow. Spessartine of an orange-yellow has been called Mandarin garnet and is found in Madagascar. Violet-red spessartines are found in rhyolites in Colorado and Maine.

Garnet is illuminating to dark places and dark souls. This mineral stimulates the survival instinct by bringing willpower and courage to a situation. Garnet will quickly bring those internalized ideas and feeling one has to the surface to be acted upon and carried out. It is a good stone for depression. Garnet promotes joy and hope while lessening anger, especially towards oneself. It primarily cleanses the root chakra; however, one can use garnet to balance the sacral chakra. Garnet inspires love, passion, devotion, and loyalty. As a stone of commitment, garnet encourages personal relationships of all kinds. It is a useful tool for both personal relationships and business relationships. Metaphysically, garnet can improve blood circulation, help with impotence, alleviate menopause symptoms, and aid problems with the pituitary gland and thyroid. Those with Aquarius, Capricorn, Leo, or Virgo as their astrological sun sign will benefit most from the metaphysical effects of garnet. Hold garnet and affirm: “I am loyal to myself and others.”
